Peek a Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons Grand Staircase Escalante Utah

I went last week, started first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds. At this point, despite having hiked in the hot desert many times, I began to fall ill with multiple signs of heat exhaustion. Eventually we made it to the start of Peekaboo! This was an incredible hike!!! Go clockwise. Be sure to follow the loop of the lollipop clockwise and when you get to the second gulch you do encounter one spot with a large drop. If your kids are under the age of 8, I would highly recommend skipping this trail. We then made it over to Spooky. Hard to describe but the point is that you never have to take a 5 foot jump straight down if you do not want to Do not miss this hike! It was a beautiful canyon, but it did add about 3 miles extra out and back to my hike. This app is a must and download so you can follow offline. There were cairns out there so we thought we were on a trail but we just ended up feeling lost and like we were wandering around. There are a few holds to help you get up! Awesome, seemingly endless slot canyons and amazing views greet hikers who have planned ahead and prepared. By the time I course-corrected it was mid-day and conditions were very hot and dry. I strongly suggest following that. It is best done by helping each other from the bottom and the top. We did ok but that is a long time to feel rattled!

The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking and is best used from May until November. Climb over a few of the boulders to the right and you will find a hike where you peekaboo canyon flash flood drop in. Recommend a small backpack and no tank tops; we got pretty scratched up.

By that point in the day there was pretty much no shade, it was hot, and we had run out of water. Peekaboo first. Spooky is much more narrow and technical. Once inside, it is a lot of blackjack dragon 21 and beautiful!

Go early to avoid the heat and the people! First hike in slot peekaboo canyon flash flood was incredible. The beginning is peekaboo canyon flash flood to climb up into. Definitely have your AllTrails app on, at the very least keep your eyes peeled!

There is a climb up into peek-a-boo so I suggest shoes with good peekaboo canyon flash flood. There is an overflow parking lot but that will add to your hike.

Awesome hike! If you have a bigger build, there may be parts where you have to really squeeze through. This should be rated harder. Luckily, a party of hikers found me under a tree and administered water, electrolytes, and helped me cool down in the shade.

Camping is available yet requires a free overnight camping permit available at the visitor centers, or self-register at the trailhead. They will just get in the way. Hot walk in and out in the sun. Spooky can get narrow, down to 12 inches in some places. Please keep in mind that slot canyons can be very dangerous, as hikers can get stuck, there can be flash floods, and it is very difficult to locate stranded hikers inside them. The hike back to the cars for us was brutal. Bring plenty of water. I did alone and it was hard. Hole in the Rock Road is generally passable except following storms or in heavy snow, and the spur road to the trailhead has recently been improved - please stay on designated roads. One of the funnest hikes I have ever done! So worth the effort but it takes commitment lol 1st challenge is the 25 mile dirt road. I ran into numerous people who got lost trying to do the loop Mind over matter helped me, and I focused on the adventure. But once your in the peek a boo to spooky gulch loop and then we did the dry fork narrows as a loop too. When we returned to our car there were many more cars and no spots in the main parking lot. Dry Fork is pretty and wider and easiest to get through. Seeing the large boulder marked with cairns threw me off. Completed on 31 May Both slots were awesome and we encountered very few people. The first drop is only 4 or 5 feet. There is one part where you have to drop down quite a way. I did peek-a-boo and spooky. Second challenge is following the trail itself in the desert as the rock markers are sometimes far apart. Fairly busy. There are very narrow parts so have a bag you can take off and carry through them! You can make this hike shorter by trying the upper parking lot marked on our map with a waypoint. All in all, the canyons are incredible and a lot of fun! You can actually look behind and there is an easy drop down with a small hole to go through. But it is incredible!! You have to scramble a bit to get into Peekaboo - do this loop clockwise with Peekaboo first - but it's worth it. The walls feel like sandpaper so wear pants and bring long sleeve shirt to wear while you move through the canyons to protect your skin. So, I hiked the rim there were foot steps - I think others had same issue and then entered through the exit. This was awesome! Follow the cairns down to the wash. On this particular day, I made a few major errors that caused me to fall into heat exhaustion and have to be rescued by another hiking party. The second drop I did backwards, using a rock as a handhold and dropped the last couple feet. The trail between the two canyons is a little difficult to identify so try to download the trail beforehand or keep a very close eye out for the cairns. Fun but harder than expected! We had people coming the opposite way at us through Spooky. The slot canyon is beautiful! The trail is very sandy, so it causes hikers to utilize more energy to navigate the trail, which adds to output and raises body temp even further. I made my way with great effort due to illness back up to the ridge-trail that leads out to the parking lot about 1. Parents - please read! I was alone and could not scale the wall into Peek-a-Boo and attempted to hike to Spooky when I realized I was low on water. Very tight. The route difficulty varies depending on your level of experience and preparation - have fun, yet don't underestimate desert challenges. One of the best I have ever been on! I enjoyed the scramble over some of the rocks and corners! Worst part is the unpaved BLM road to get to the trailhead haha, very bumpy and slow-going but made it fine in a sedan. Another kind hiker gave us an extra bottle of water and that was a lifesaver! Loved it. I wish we had just turned around and hiked back out of Dry Fork Narrows like it shows on the map but because we thought we had just done Peekaboo we tried to loop around thinking we were headed to the entrance of Spooky! Lots of crouching down and climbing around to get through. You scramble, you hoist your body up and down, at points you walk single file. Do not bring large packs as there are areas that are so narrow you will have to walk sideways carrying your pack in front or behind you. It was hot enough on the return hike that starting even earlier would have been nice. Plan ahead and prepare, stay on route, and remember to bring lots of water as it is bound to get very hot during the summer and there is often little to no shade. The steep uphill out of the canyon near the end is tough in the heat, but you get great shade in the canyons. I am an experienced hiker, having hiked this area several times on much longer trails. It is uphill and lots of sand that makes it hard to walk in. When you first get to spooky, it looks like a bunch of rocks have recently fallen and blocked the entrance. I did have salty snacks and a full camelback of water. During your hike, you may encounter other canyons leading off from the route shown on this page. I wore dark pants.
